How to Change Scroll Direction on a Chromebook

Short answer: Open Settings, select Device, then Touchpad. Look for Scroll direction or Scrolling and switch between Move content and Traditional. Move content makes the page follow your fingers, like a phone or tablet. Traditional is the classic laptop or mouse-wheel feel. If the option is missing, update ChromeOS and check again.

What the scroll direction setting changes

Most Chromebook trackpads support two-finger scrolling out of the box. The default scroll direction feels like content follows your fingertips, the same way a phone or tablet page moves under your hand. ChromeOS also includes an option to flip the direction so the trackpad behaves like a more traditional laptop.

The exact label depends on the ChromeOS version. You may see Scroll direction, Scrolling, or a dropdown with the two choices. The common options are Move content and Traditional. Move content keeps the page moving in the same direction as your fingers. Traditional reverses that feel, which is closer to a classic laptop mouse or scroll wheel.

The touchpad setting only affects the built-in trackpad. An external mouse has a separate scroll direction option, and a touchscreen always responds to direct touch. Checking that you are in the right settings page avoids changing the wrong input device.

If you are coming from a Windows laptop, the default ChromeOS direction can feel upside down. If you are coming from a phone or tablet, the default may feel exactly right. The best option is the one that lets you scroll without thinking, not the one that matches a particular brand.

Change the touchpad scroll direction

The scroll direction setting is in the normal ChromeOS Settings app. You do not need a special command, a browser flag, or a restart. In most versions, changing it takes only a few moments.

If your Chromebook uses an older ChromeOS version, you might find the option under Device, then Touchpad, then the Scrolling menu rather than under a separate Scroll direction label. Both names refer to the same control. When you switch, test with a simple web page to make sure the direction matches your expectation. You can switch back the same way at any time.

Follow these steps:

  • At the bottom right of the screen, select the time.
  • Select the Settings gear icon.
  • In the left menu, select Device.
  • Select Touchpad.
  • Look for Scroll direction or the Scrolling menu.
  • Choose Move content or Traditional.

Change scroll direction on an external mouse

A USB or Bluetooth mouse connected to a Chromebook is treated as a separate input device. To change its scroll direction, open Settings, select Device, then Mouse, and look for Scroll direction or Scrolling. Pick Move content or Traditional in the same way you would for the trackpad.

Because the mouse setting is separate, you can keep the trackpad in one direction and the mouse in the other. This is useful if you switch between a laptop and a desktop workstation. If the Mouse menu does not show a scroll direction option, the mouse may not support configurable scrolling through ChromeOS; use any utility provided by the mouse manufacturer instead.

If you don't see the scroll direction option

The label and location of touchpad settings can change between ChromeOS releases. ChromeOS checks for updates automatically when it connects to the internet, but you can also check manually. Open Settings, select About ChromeOS, select Check for updates, and restart if an update is found. After the restart, return to Device and Touchpad to see whether the scroll direction option appears.

On a Chromebook managed by a school or employer, an administrator can hide or lock device settings. If the Touchpad section is missing or grayed out, contact the administrator. On a personal Chromebook, updating ChromeOS is the first thing to try when any Settings option seems missing.

When two-finger scrolling is not working

Two-finger scrolling depends on the trackpad supporting multi-touch input. Most current Chromebooks do, but the gesture can feel different depending on trackpad size, surface, and sensitivity. If the page is not scrolling, first confirm the scroll direction option is set and that two-finger scrolling is enabled in the Touchpad menu.

The next step is to work through the trackpad guides in order: trackpad gestures, adjust touchpad sensitivity, and reset touchpad settings. If the cursor moves but scrolling still fails, use the trackpad scroll not working guide. A dirty or oily trackpad surface can also interfere with multi-touch detection, so clean the surface gently before assuming the hardware is faulty.

Choose a Chromebook with a trackpad you like

Scroll direction is a small setting, but trackpad comfort is part of the physical Chromebook. Models range from small, compact designs with limited trackpad space to larger designs with more room for your fingers. If scrolling is central to your work, choose a device with a trackpad that feels comfortable for the way you hold your hands.

For guidance on the right size, compare compact-size Chromebooks and full-size Chromebooks. If you often fold the screen into tablet mode, check best 2-in-1 Chromebooks. For school or general use, the student Chromebook guide is a useful starting point.

If you plan to spend most of your time at a desk with an external mouse, trackpad size matters less because the mouse handles scrolling. For travel and meetings, the built-in trackpad is your main input, so a comfortable trackpad becomes more important.

Questions

Can I change the scroll direction for my external mouse separately?

Yes. Chromebooks keep mouse and touchpad settings separate. Open Settings, select Device, then Mouse, and look for a Scroll direction or Scrolling option. Changing one does not change the other.

What is the difference between Move content and Traditional?

Move content makes the page follow your fingers, the same way a touchscreen feels when you drag. Traditional gives the classic laptop or mouse-wheel feel by reversing the trackpad direction. You can switch between the two in the Touchpad menu whenever you like.

Will changing the touchpad direction also change my touchscreen?

No. A touchscreen uses direct touch, so your finger always moves the content directly. The scroll direction setting only affects the trackpad and the separate mouse setting.

I don't see Scroll direction in Settings. What should I do?

Update ChromeOS first. Open Settings, select About ChromeOS, choose Check for updates, and restart when the update is ready. If the setting still is not there, your Chromebook may be managed by an administrator who hides device settings.

Does the change apply immediately?

Yes. The scroll direction setting takes effect as soon as you select the option. There is no need to restart after changing it.

Can I use a keyboard shortcut to reverse scrolling?

No. ChromeOS does not include a dedicated keyboard shortcut for scroll direction. Use Settings, Device, Touchpad, or Settings, Device, Mouse to control each input.
